David Bowie – “I Can’t Give Everything Away (2002 – 2016)” – con Paola Maugeri

FIVE YEARS (1969-1973), DAVID BOWIE 2. WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974-1976), DAVID BOWIE 3. A NEW CAREER IN A NEW TOWN (1977-1982), DAVID BOWIE 4. LOVING THE ALIEN (1983-1988) e DAVID BOWIE 5. BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992-2001) e uscirà il 12 settembre. DAVID BOWIE 6. I CAN’T GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY (2002-2016) è un cofanetto di dodici CD, diciotto vinili e disponibile per download/streaming digitale standard, che prende il nome dalla traccia di chiusura di (BLACKSTAR), l’ultimo album in studio di Bowie. I cofanetti includono nuove versioni rimasterizzate (ad eccezione di “No Plan”), con il contributo del co-produttore di David, Tony Visconti. HEATHEN del 2002 fu il primo album su cui Bowie e Visconti lavorarono insieme in ventidue anni. Registrato in uno studio residenziale nello stato di New York, ricordò a Visconti il periodo trascorso con David a Berlino negli anni ’70: “Non c’era una sala di controllo. La console era a un’estremità dello studio e la band era posizionata all’altra estremità. L’acustica era piuttosto live e, grazie alla mia esperienza di registrazione di “Heroes” agli Hansa Studios di Berlino, nell’enorme Grand Hall (conosciuta come sala di registrazione Meistersaal), volevo che quell’acustica funzionasse per noi”. Per il successivo REALITY, pubblicato nel 2003, Visconti ricorda: “David disse che voleva scrivere per la sua nuova band in tour, che avrebbe anche registrato l’album”, conferendo al disco un suono più “vigoroso”, come lo definì Bowie all’epoca. La band si mise poi in tournée per A REALITY TOUR, uno dei tour più amati della carriera di David, che viene qui presentato per la prima volta in un ordine risequenziato per riflettere meglio le scalette dei concerti di Dublino. La versione in vinile dell’album è stampata in blu trasparente, a ricordare la sua uscita iniziale. Dopo un decennio lontano dallo studio, le sessioni per THE NEXT DAY si sono svolte in segreto; Visconti racconta di quel periodo: “Ci siamo ripromessi di non dire a nessuno che David e noi stavamo lavorando a un nuovo album, coinvolgendo persino i nostri partner. Il suo duplice scopo era scrivere e creare senza pressioni esterne, e voleva anche che l’uscita fosse una sorpresa totale. Tutto è andato alla grande, tranne quando è stato visto un paio di volte mentre andava e veniva dallo studio The Magic Shop a Noho, Manhattan, con sopracciglia perplesse. Una volta sono stato fermato da un fan che mi ha riconosciuto e mi ha chiesto: “David Bowie sta lavorando a un nuovo album?”. Ho risposto: “Assolutamente no!”. Più tardi, quando avevamo i mix grezzi dei nostri lavori, camminavo per Manhattan con un gran sorriso stampato in faccia. Nessuno poteva sapere che stavo ascoltando nuove canzoni di Bowie con gli auricolari”. Quelle sessioni hanno prodotto così tante canzoni che quelle tracce aggiuntive, insieme a due remix, sono state incluse in THE NEXT DAY EXTRA. (BLACKSTAR), l’ultimo album in studio di David, è uscito l’8 gennaio 2016. Bowie e Visconti sono andati al quartetto jazz di Donny McCaslin che suonava dal vivo a New York dopo aver lavorato con lui sul brano “Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)”. Tony Visconti: “Il quartetto di Donny non era una normale jazz band, erano super musicisti allo stesso livello dei musicisti classici nelle migliori orchestre sinfoniche. David mi ha detto che questa band, con Mark Guiliana – batteria, Tim Lefebvre – basso e Jason Lindner – tastiere, sarà la band per la registrazione di”. Ognuna delle tracce di (BLACKSTAR) è stata registrata in un giorno; Visconti ricorda: “La prima canzone dell’album è iniziata con “‘Tis a Pity She Was a Whore”, il 7 gennaio. Dopo un paio di prove con David che cantava nella cabina di isolamento, eravamo pronti a partire. La prima ripresa è stata perfetta. Abbiamo detto a Donny che la ripresa era favolosa. Ci ha ringraziato e ci ha chiesto: “Qual è la prossima canzone?”. Avevo dimenticato che i musicisti jazz sono esperti di una sola ripresa. Non era una cosa normale per chi fa musica rock e pop. Di solito ci vogliono molte ore per ottenere una ripresa così buona. Per sicurezza, abbiamo chiesto un’altra ripresa e Donny ha acconsentito.” In occasione del compleanno di Bowie nel 2017, l’EP NO PLAN ha raccolto i brani originali scritti per lo spettacolo Off-Broadway di Bowie, LAZARUS, tra cui “Lazarus”, “No Plan”, “Killing A Little Time” e “When I Met You”, tutti registrati durante le sessioni di (BLACKSTAR). In esclusiva per entrambi i cofanetti ci sono MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL e RE:CALL 6. Il primo è stato registrato il 18 luglio 2002 al prestigioso Montreux Jazz Festival e, tra i 31 brani, include un’esibizione completa, a parte un brano, di uno degli album più venerati di Bowie, LOW. RE:CALL 6 contiene 41 versioni non presenti nell’album, alternative, b-side e brani della colonna sonora, inclusi brani mai pubblicati prima su CD o vinile in edizioni 3CD e 4LP. Il libro che accompagna i cofanetti fisici, di 128 pagine per il CD e 84 per il vinile, presenta appunti inediti, disegni e testi manoscritti di Bowie e foto di Sukita (che ha scattato la foto di copertina del cofanetto), Jimmy King, Frank W. Ockenfels 3, Markus Klinko, Mark “Blammo” Adams e altri, oltre a memorabilia, note tecniche sugli album del coproduttore Tony Visconti e note di design di Jonathan Barnbrook. Il cofanetto CD includerà, ove applicabile, versioni mini-vinili fedelmente riprodotte degli album originali, e i CD saranno di colore oro anziché argento come di consueto.
