Gli U2 sono tornati a fare quello che sono sempre riusciti a fare meglio: portare la musica direttamente nelle strade. Lo scorso 12 maggio Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton e Larry Mullen Jr. hanno trasformato le vie di Città del Messico in un set cinematografico a cielo aperto per girare il video di “Street of Dreams“, il primo singolo estratto dal loro prossimo album di studio.
La scelta della location non è stata casuale: la band si è esibita su un autobus scolastico decorato con graffiti dall’artista messicano Chavis Mármol, con centinaia di fan che hanno avuto l’opportunità unica di partecipare alle riprese. I fan selezionati hanno ricevuto inviti via email tra il 6 e il 10 maggio, con la richiesta che tutti i partecipanti fossero maggiorenni e pronti a filmare all’aperto.
Questa settimana Città del Messico ospita anche la Street Child World Cup 2026, con 30 squadre provenienti da tutto il mondo che si sfideranno in un torneo che si terrà dal 6 al 14 maggio.

Questo evento segna la seconda apparizione pubblica di Larry Mullen Jr. con la band dopo una serie di interventi chirurgici subiti tra il 2023 e 2024, che lo avevano costretto a saltare la residency degli U2 alla Sphere di Las Vegas. La sua presenza sul palco rappresenta un momento significativo per i fan che aspettavano di rivedere la formazione completa in azione.
Il video di “Street of Dreams” evoca immediatamente i ricordi di un altro iconico momento nella storia degli U2. Alla fine degli anni ’80, la band aveva fermato il traffico di downtown Los Angeles con una performance sul tetto per il video di “Where the Streets Have No Name“, che vinse il Grammy Award per il miglior video musicale.
Dopo aver eseguito il nuovo brano tre volte sull’autobus, gli U2 si sono spostati su un balcone nelle vicinanze per regalare ai fan un mini-set di classici: “Desire”, “Vertigo”, “Angel of Harlem” e “In A Little While”.
Questo sarà il primo album di materiale completamente inedito dal 2017, quando uscì “Songs of Experience”, segnando il ritorno degli U2 con composizioni originali dopo anni di progetti speciali, EP e reinterpretazioni del loro catalogo.
